چکیده

We discuss prospects for detecting a spectral break in γ-ray spectra of blazars due to the extragalactic background light (EBL) density falling off between the near and mid-IR. A measurable spectral change in the TeV spectra at 1 TeV could arise from a rapid or slow drop in the EBL density above ≈ 1 um. This effect is mediated by the ratio of the near to mid-IR density of EBL. A detection of such a spectral feature could become a clear signature of EBL absorption. A nondetection would give a strong observational constraint to the shape of the EBL spectrum. We present calculations estimating the sensitivity of TeV telescopes for detecting such a break for blazar observations at different redshifts. The Universe Viewed in Gamma - Rays 1 The Extragalactic Background Light and the γ – Ray Opac - ity of the Local Universe

The extragalactic background light (EBL) in the UV to far–infrared wavelength region is the repository of all energy releases in the universe since the epoch of recombination. It is also a source of opacity for TeV γ–ray sources. We briefly review the observational status of the EBL and discuss the uncertainties in its intensity at different wavelengths. The constraints on the EBL are used to p...

Formation of hard VHE gamma-ray spectra of blazars due to internal photon-photon absorption

The energy spectra of TeV gamma-rays from blazars, after being corrected for intergalatic absorption in the Extragalactic Background Light (EBL), appear unusually hard, a fact that poses challenges to the conventional models of particle acceleration in TeV blazars and/or to the EBL models. In this paper we show that the internal absorption of gamma-rays caused by interactions with dense narrow-...

Constraining the IMF using TeV gamma ray absorption

Gamma rays from distant sources suffer attenuation due to pair production off of ∼ 1μm EBL photons via γγ → e+e− [1]. The cross section for the pair production is maximized just above threshold, when λEBL ∼ (Eγ/TeV )μm. We may exploit this process in order to indirectly measure the EBL, and constrain models of galaxy formation [2–5]. Here, using semi-analytic models of galaxy formation, we exam...

New limits on the density of the extragalactic background light in the optical to the far-infrared from the spectra of all known TeV blazars

Aims. The extragalactic background light (EBL) in the ultraviolet to far-infrared wavelength region carries important information about galaxy and star formation history. Direct measurements, especially in the mid infrared region, are difficult. We derive limits on the EBL density from the energy spectra of distant sources of very high energetic γ-rays (VHE γ-rays). Methods. VHE γ-rays are atte...

Detecting axionlike particles with gamma ray telescopes.

We propose that axionlike particles (ALPs) with a two-photon vertex, consistent with all astrophysical and laboratory bounds, may lead to a detectable signature in the spectra of high-energy gamma-ray sources. This occurs as a result of gamma rays being converted into ALPs in the magnetic fields of efficient astrophysical accelerators according to the "Hillas criterion", such as jets of active ...
